It’s All About the Blood.
We used to sing songs like “Nothing but the blood of Jesus”, “There is a Fountain Filled with Blood “and “Power in the Blood” but you never hear much about the Blood in the new songs we sing. What has changed ? Is the Blood of Jesus important anymore? Or just old-fashioned and out of vogue? It seems like are we are somehow offended by the Blood? Goodness knows there is plenty of blood and gore blasted across our television and movie screens today seems we should be used to it. But the Televangelists don't mention it much while they're telling us how happy and rich we will be if we just send them money.
People used to complain when we still talked about the blood, and I guess it is the truth, God really seems to be obsessed with blood. And this makes some folks uncomfortable. Sadly, the blood and with it the power has been drained from how the gospel is presented these days. which beggars the question, without the Blood, is it truly the Gospel? Without the Blood there can be no cross and without the cross there is no redemption, without redemption we are lost and condemned to an eternity without God. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7).
In Exodus 4:25 we read the words of Moses wife after she tried begrudgingly to fulfill God’s requirement of circumcision on one of her sons. (Not correctly I might add), “Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his (Moses) feet and said, “Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.” Ex.4:25.
She did this in an attempt to placate God’s anger at the fact that they had failed to obey his ordinance concerning the circumcision of their son. Circumcision can be traced back to the Blood covenant God had made with Abraham in Genesis 15. In this covenant we see the Blood promise moving forward toward the cross and God’s plan for man. Yet she did not see the big picture and lashed out in anger when she called Moses a “Bloody Husband”. Is our God a “bloody” God?
When we were growing up we were taught to “Plead the Blood” over our loved ones or ourselves when we wanted protection and that our sins were washed away by the Blood of Jesus when we were saved. They quoted the Scripture that tells us “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). We took it at face value, child-like but what does it really mean?
First, the Bible is our source, our guidebook and our comfort, it is a tool, a weapon and a continual link to God. "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword." —Hebrews 4:12a. But like it or not the Bible talks lot about Blood, Blood is mentioned 447 times in the Scriptures. I doubt if Steven King could beat that.
Blood flows like a crimson river through the pages of the Bible from the very beginning in Genesis till it flows to the horse’s bridles (Rev.14:20) and the Lamb wears a garment dipped in Blood in the book of Revelation. “He was clothed in a vesture (garment) dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God... And he hath on his vesture (garment) and on his thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:11, 13, 16).
In the twenty second chapter of Genesis, we see an allegory played out with starling clarity as we watch as Abraham sacrifices the ram he found tangled in a thicket instead of his son Isaac. This is but the end of first act of a Cosmic play in which blood seems to be a central character. We see that a substitute will be provided and that a sinner might be spared. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”- John 15:13.
Blood is held with reverence in the Bible, there are guidelines to how it is handled, and the consumption of Blood is strictly forbidden. "Moreover, ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people." —Leviticus 7:26,27
We are told in Leviticus that our very life-force is housed in our veins. Leviticus 17 shows us this; “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul." —Leviticus 17:11. Also in the 14th verse, “For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof." --Leviticus 17:14. That’s pretty straight-forward don’t you think?

The Spirit is life, when the Spirit leaves your body you are dead. If the life resides in the blood it would make sense to believe that the Spirit/soul resides in the blood. There is a word in Hebrew [nephesh] which can be translated as life or soul. So, the verse is really saying: “The soul of the flesh is in the blood.” The soul’s indwelling of our bloodstream is a new thought for some, but it is central to understanding this subject. Where else might your soul reside? Your mind? The mind is unpredictable and doesn’t touch the rest of the body in the way the Blood does. The body decays and goes back into the earth. The spirit and soul contain the life force “The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul”. Genesis 2:7 and as we see in Leviticus 17:11,14 listed above that life resides in the blood.
This is why the blood is so important. Without the blood there is no life. Animals have life, do they have souls you ask? That is a rabbit trail for another day, as interesting a study as that is. Today we are looking at ourselves and the blood of humanity. Especially the Blood of one certain unique individual. This man is Jesus and in considering his blood we must look at the dual issues of not only the physical but the Spiritual.
The human body is a marvelous biological machine consisting of many various tissues. Most are stationary cells assigned to specific tasks. But the five pints of blood is fluid thus allowing it to be mobile as it makes its way through the body it is in continual communication with every other cell. It carries nourishment to the system and carries away the waste that is produced by metabolism. Every twenty-three seconds blood makes its circuit through the body powered by the magnificent pumping apparatus we call the heart. Over and over it makes this journey through our system all the days of our lives supplying nutrients and cleansing our cells. This is basic, but much of Its function has never been completely understood.
There is a certain spiritual element to blood, we talk of the “Blood of our Fathers” terms of genetics and having certain things like farming or music ‘in our blood” evil people are said to have ‘bad blood.” These things have reference to the mystery of life and go back to the Scripture that tells us “Life is in the blood’. When blood can no longer make its rotation through the body to feed our cells and organs we die, no one is completely dead until his blood ceases to circulate. “Life is in the blood” and our blood carries with it our life force.
Now the plot thickens (If not the Blood). When we consider the Blood of Christ we open the lid to the box that contains the great mystery.
The link between the spiritual and the physical is hard to understand. Christ was a man, his body worked just like yours and mine, yet he was also God. Hebrews 2:17, NIV: "For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people." On the surface it seems cut and dried but there is a deep magic here. The Bible refers to the Church as the “Body of Christ” and us as “members of His body” working in unison with each other just as different parts of the human body work together as one functioning unit. In this organism Jesus is the head while we make up the other cells of the body. “He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence” Colossians 1:18. We are all united as one body by the Blood of Christ, each dependent on the circulation of the blood for nourishment, removal of toxins and life.
Every born-again believer is related to every other believer and we unite together as “brothers and sisters” through the blood of Christ. Just as every individual can be identified by their blood so are we identified by the blood of Jesus as part of the family of Christ, just as the human body cannot live without blood the Church would not exist without the shed blood of Jesus.

We may be as far removed from each other as east is from west, separated by race, culture or creed, some of us dance while others light candles and wear robes, we worship in grass huts and tall cathedrals but if we accept the precious blood of Jesus as sacrifice for our sins we are family, joined together by blood.
Okay, this is Christian philosophy 101, all you really need to get the job done. But hey! Beloved, let’s dig a little deeper? You game? Let’s start back at the beginning.
Black, white, yellow, purple, pink, God made us of one Blood. It’s true that the same blood types run in all races and nobody cares at the blood bank what race you are. The Bible tells us that God, " hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth." —Acts 17:26a
We started off well enough, but Adam messed up and polluted the Blood line when he let sin into the picture. This is hard to understand, but one sin was all it took. Just like if you tell one lie you become a liar or a teller of lies, or commit one murder to become a murderer, so one sin made Adam a sinner and condemned the Human race. God knew the end from the beginning and he set it up this way, I may not understand all of it but he’s very clear about this principle in His Word. I choose by faith to trust him.
When they ate the fruit, they became separated from God. He no longer walked with them as a friend in the cool of the day. “They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden” Genesis 3:5. There was something else that happened to. It was as if the fruit was infected by some deadly virus that changed their blood chemistry and brought death into the equation.
Remember, how God created Adam from the dust of the earth? At first he was just a lifeless mud pie until " [God] breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." —Genesis 2:7b with that breath from God came something magical, something that put life into that first man. That first spark lit the roaring flame that is mankind. What was in that breath? Life itself and when life was added to God’s little mud pie it made all the difference, Before that breath Adam was just a useless bit of clay but with that breath life was added and the sacred secret transpired within the blood and “Man became a living soul”.
“The day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." —Genesis 2:17b There has been debate through the years as to just what the fruit of the Knowledge of good and evil was, I certainly don’t know, but whatever it was consuming this fruit resulted in a sort of terminal genetic “Blood Poisoning” that has followed us like a chronic disease for many generations. Snow White’s step-mother would have been envious of so potent a thing. It has lasted six thousand years and affected the entire family of Adam. So, we see that because we are all related by Blood, Adam brought a sentence of Death on the whole human race by his disobedience.
You might point out here that Adam didn’t drop dead on the spot, which is technically true but the process of dying began at that moment and for all intents Adam was a “walking Dead man” both physically and spiritually. When this happened, something transpired in Man’s blood, something happened to our DNA that is passed down through the blood from one generation to another. The earth was not to see another truly sinless man till Jesus came.
The virgin birth was surprising, there was a problem and God reached “outside the box” (as He often does) to solve it. Christ was “of the seed of woman” (whatever that entails) He was a product of her body and as the “seed of woman” (He was fully human).
I never realized this fact until I undertook this study, (I’m not exactly a science nerd), but a baby makes Its own blood which works separately from his mothers. An exchange does take place through the walls of the blood vessels but only of waste products and nutrients. We have learned, (recently perhaps) that the baby produces his own blood, it’s manufactured in his liver, spleen and bone marrow. Mary supplied the womb and the apparatus to nourish his body but not the blood that flowed through His veins.
The seed for Christ’s conception came from the Holy Spirit, supernaturally prepared by God. Jesus’ blood was produced within himself and even though her Mary’s body supported Jesus in His development like any other baby he was a separate entity from his earthly Mother.
“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God”. Luke 1:35.
Just as our life-force resides in our blood so did Christ’s, He was fully human after all. Here is a mystery, a hard thing, you may not accept it but for those who can it seems that when we receive our redemptive transfusion of the blood of Jesus by the Holy Spirit we become new creatures in Christ. The work of salvation is finished, and we are restored “Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away; behold, new things have come”. (2 Corinthians 5:17).
You can say this is not literal but Spiritual. We spiritualize everything, but in the process, we miss real concrete miracles in our physical world. Why is it so hard to accept the link between the physical and the spiritual? I think it’s because we lack faith and we figure when our prayers don’t get answered we can just spiritualize the situation and then hide behind the ensuing smokescreen. The vail between the Spiritual and physical is very thin, and the spiritual and physical realms are bound together with sacred cords.
“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” John 6:53

“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” John 6:53
---What?? This is a mystery, Jesus really did tell us to drink His blood and He lost many followers that day because of it. Why would He say something like that? Was this some sort of strange metaphor? What happens if you take it at face value? It seems to be saying that we have no part in the life available through his blood if we don’t partake of His blood and body.
The Catholic Church teaches that at the Eucharist the bread and wine turn into the literal blood and body of Jesus. They call the teaching “Transubstantiation” and there has been a lot of debate on the subject. But I don’t think that is what this is saying. Call me a heretic if you want to, but I think (John 6:53) it may be speaking of a transformation that happens within a person’s physical body at redemption. When we receive the life Christ offers through his blood it is possible that an actual physical change may take place. We see this acted out every time we take the bread and juice when we take communion at Church.
“24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 1 Corinthians 11:24,25 King James Version (KJV)
It is an old mystery, a treasure to be sought and found. The physical and the spiritual merge creating the new creature. Christ becomes part of us as we become part of Him in one body, the Church, He the head and we the members, old things gone, we are changed into new life in his image,
“He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence”. Colossians 1:18
I have been a Christian for a long time and I have seen miracles happen, but the biggest, strangest, most glorious miracle I have ever seen is a person steeped in sin become a free, changed individual saved by the precious shed blood of Jesus Christ. This type of change is impossible except through Christ. Above all I am grateful for Jesus and the blood he shed, that we might have hope in him. Matthew 24: 13 tells us that “he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved”.- Jireh's Girl
